Every week I take one claim that is making the rounds and read the evidence behind it. This is edition 1.
The headline: Antarctic krill, the shrimp-like crustaceans that hold up the Southern Ocean food web, were found at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, more than 3,000 feet down. That is a habitat their life cycle was not thought to include.
The paper is Bernard et al., "Deep Sea hydrothermal vent habitats support gravid Antarctic krill," published in Communications Biology on September 15, 2026. It is not a press release. It has the receipts.
What they actually found
- At Hook Ridge, in the Bransfield Strait, the krill they collected were all reproductive females, and the gravid ones carried paired spermatophores. They had mated.
- Their stable isotope signatures, gut microbial communities, and trace-metal profiles are consistent with a diet of chemosynthetic microbes and prior visits to vent sites. Read carefully, that is a match to a chemistry, not a meal anyone watched. The paper reads it as evidence the krill had been eating there, not just drifting past. What it cannot show is the mechanism, or why they came.
- ROV footage from a second site, Quest Caldera in the Scotia Arc, showed the same pattern. Two vents, roughly 1,000 miles apart. So it is not one weird afternoon.
Why it matters
Antarctic krill have arguably the highest total biomass of any wild animal on Earth, nearly half a billion tons. Penguins, seals, and whales eat them, or eat something that eats them. They are also fished hard, for aquaculture feed and omega-3 pills. If a real part of their life cycle happens at vents, then the map used to protect them has a hole in it. The paper's own conclusion is about marine protected area planning.
What it does not say
- Nobody knows why the pregnant females are there. Food is one candidate. Protection or warmth for developing eggs is another. The paper does not settle it.
- This is an observation, not an experiment. It does not show that krill need vents. It shows that they use them.
- "Use" is still the right word. The finding expands the known habitat. It does not overturn the old picture.
The number to keep: two vents, about 1,000 miles apart, all females, all carrying eggs. That is the part that makes it more than a one-off.
